ANNUAL COMMUNITY EVENTS
Co-op School Movie Afternoon. An early Fall event, the movie afternoon allows Co-op members to get to know their community a bit better. While Co-op School students watch a movie in one classroom (supervised by students from Williamsburg Charter High School), their parents mingle and interact in another classroom. In the spirit of the Co-op, beverages, snacks, good conversation and smiles are family provided.
Fall Potluck. A Co-op School tradition, the Fall Potluck is held each year just before Thanksgiving. Students, teachers, parents, grandparents, care givers and neighbors all share a festive feast.
Kid Disco. In mid-winter, the Community Events Committee organizes a kid-friendly disco party an off-site location (past discos have been held at Sputnik on Taaffe Place). This party, open to entire community, instills the Co-op School spirit by encouraging all community members to partake in the fun. Typically held on a blustery, snowy afternoon, the chance for indoor play and dance time is always welcome. The party is traditionally DJ’d by one of our many talented Co-op parents. In the past, neighbors, friends and prospective members of the School have also attended this great party.
Spring Clothing Swap. In early spring, a clothing swap is held at the Co-op School. Families trade the clothes their children have outgrown in exchange for other families’ goods. Not only does this event provide ample time for Co-op School families to mingle, it also fosters a commitment to reducing, reusing and recycling. All remaining items are donated to a local charity.
Public School Forum. Each year the Education Committee hosts an important community event designed to educate Co-op families and community members about the city’s public school enrollment process. In the past, Pamela Wheaton from Insideschools.org has been our featured speaker, providing the inside scoop on the evolving procedures for enrolling your child in New York City public school Pre-K and Kindergarten programs. Several schools have also participated, including PS 11, PS 20, PS 56, Brooklyn New School, Community Roots Charter School, Community Partnership Charter School, and the Earth School in the East Village. At this event a small fee is collected from participants, allowing the Co-op School to pay event expenses and support the Education Committee’s book fund.
